Babies, children and teenagers are not immune from musculo-skeletal problems.
See the Cranial Osteopathy section of our website.
In 2006 alone around 175 million working days were lost to illness often due to stress and musculoskeletal disorders.
Osteopaths treat many conditions related to the work place. Whether you work at a computer terminal or
involved in heavy industry, your working environment can give rise to disorders of muscles, tendons and
joints, particularly in the back, hands and arms.
'Mouse wrist', computer hump, neck, shoulder and back pain as well as injury caused by lifting
can be relieved through osteopathic treatment with appropriate advice given on posture and workstation layout.
Repetitive Strain injuries (RSI)
We can advise on workplace posture, remedial advice, and preventative exercise and provide treatment.
Your posture can greatly influence the health of the musculo-skeletal system and is frequently assessed
by osteopaths - the natural 'S' shape curve of the spine is there for a reason, however poor posture
where the spine collapses in to an unnatural 'C' curve, especially when sitting can cause a whole
range of problems such as:
- Eyestrain
- Headaches
- Jaw stiffness
- Neck and shoulder stiffness
- Insufficient breathing
- Decreased circulation numbness and pain
- Back ache
- Compression of internal organs
- Pressure on nerves and tendons
- Pressure on discs and ligaments
We can give guidance on:
- Posture
- Exercise programmes
- Advice on a comfortable driving position
- Advice on choosing a bed
At Fixby Osteo we use a combination of Naturopathic and osteopathic principles in the area of
pre-conceptual care, see the Naturopathy area of our site.
During Pregnancy and For New Mums
Pregnancy is probably one of the most exciting and special times in a woman's life!
At Fixby Osteo, we focus on the mother, taking into account her emotional state and other factors, as well as her physical condition.
What Happens To A Woman's Body During Pregnancy?
As the baby grows in the womb, its extra weight results in a changed centre of gravity and postural changes from week to week; pregnancy puts a strain on the whole spine and this can lead to a variety of aches and pains as supporting muscles and ligaments begin to adapt. In addition to this, a woman's body is also affected by her changing hormones, causing breast size and weight to increase, which can lead to postural changes and pain occurring the upper back and neck.
For many women, pregnancy means having to cope with a whole range of symptoms, as their weight and posture changes to adapt to the growing baby.
During pregnancy, we can help give you relief from:
-
Aches and pains
-
Back pain
-
Neck ache
-

Osteopathic Treatment During Pregnancy
Osteopathic treatment through pregnancy is a wonderfully, gentle way of helping the body adapt to the largest postural change that a woman's body will undergo.
The safety of mother and baby is our first concern. After a thorough assessment, osteopathic treatment using a variety of gentle techniques, especially cranial osteopathy are used to help the body and mind adjust to these amazing changes!
Treatment may be supplemented by exercises and other forms of self help may be prescribed for the mother to do at home.
We will give you advice on how to help you adapt to your posture and learn to use your body correctly through your pregnancy.
We can advise on positions in labour, to help prevent back problems later and pain relief techniques can also be shown to the mother and her partner so that they can help during labour.
New Mums - CONGRATULATIONS!!!
After delivery it is advised that mum and baby return for structural examination, advice and check ups, as a therapeutic treatment can be very valuable and extremely relaxing, helping you both to adjust to your new life together!
